McEnnedy American Way in English

Back in July 2011, I was so excited about my recent haul during Lidl American Week that I posted about the McEnnedy American Way products that I’d bought. Since then, the blog has received hundreds of hits from people searching for McEnnedy ingredient lists and instructions in English. Who knew?! As a service to fellow English-speaking expats, then, I’ve translated ingredient lists, nutritional information, and instructions for the following McEnnedy items. There will be more to come as I purchase additional items in future Lidl runs.

Disclaimer: please note that I’m not affiliated with McEnnedy in any way. Translations are provided to the best of my ability (and with some help from Google Translate!). Please let me know if there exists a better translation for an ingredient.

McEnnedy American Way Apple Pie

Ingredients:
Mix for the Pie Crust: wheat flour, sugar, baking powder (acidulant: diphosphate disodium; gasifying: sodium hydrogen carbonate; wheat starch), salt, aroma.
Powder for the apple filling: sugar, starch, cinnamon. Produced in Germany.

Allergy information: May contain traces of soy, egg, tree nuts, and milk.

Instructions:

The box contains 450 grams of dry mix for the pie crust and 110 grams of powder for the apple filling.

You will need (in addition to the contents of the box):
- 150 grams of soft butter
- 1 egg
- 1 kg of apples

1. Preheat oven to 200º Celsius (or level 4 for gas oven, or 180º C for convection oven).

2. Prepare the pie crust: beat the egg and set aside. In a separate, deep bowl mix the pie crust powder (the larger packet), the 150g of butter and ⅔ of the beaten egg. Mix with an electric beater until the dough is uniform.

2. Grease a pie plate with a removable bottom (about 26cm diameter). Cover the bottom and the walls of the pie plate with ¾ of the dough. Press the dough against the sides of the pie plate so that you have a border of 2cm high.

3. Peel the apples, discard the seeds and cut into small pieces. In a bowl, mix the apple pieces with the contents of the apple pie filling (the smaller packet). Pour onto the pie dough. Roll the rest of the pie dough until you have 2mm thickness, cut in lines of 2cm wide and place on top of the apples in the form of a rack. Brush the top with the rest of the egg and bake in the middle of the preheated oven for 45 minutes.

4. After baking, let cool for about 1 hour. Then take out the pie from the removable pie pan with the help of a knife.

Nicola, I already responded to you via email but wanted to put my answer down here as well. I’m so sorry I can’t help you: I haven’t seen the Cheesecake mix yet at Lidl. But when/if I do, I’ll snatch it up and translate the instructions here. Thanks for writing!

    • Kamila

I too would like English cheese cake instructions. Thanks

      • TheSweetRoad

Hey Nicola and Kamila, first of all – Nicola I’m so sorry it took so long to get back to you. I think I just missed this comment and didn’t see it until now. I haven’t seen cheesecake in Lidl yet, so unfortunately I can’t help you guys there. If I see it I’ll buy it and post a translation. Take care!

    • TheSweetRoad

Yum! I haven’t tried the ice-cream yet, but it sounds delicious! Carrefour just started carrying Ben and Jerry’s – we keep thinking about buying it but it’s so expensive we always end up passing on it. But…one day!! :) Thanks for writing!

  • Jody

I’m American and living in UK and I love Lidl. And I find myself buying American Way products occasionally too because some things are really hard to find here. I just want to say though, please, PLEASE don’t think this is what American food is all about. Its doesn’t just have cheap looking packaging, the food items are a HORRIBLE representation of our every day foods. Good in an emergency only lol.

    • Jody

      Sorry for the typos.

      • TheSweetRoad

Jody, I totally hear you – it’s fascinating to me what people think of as representative German, French, Chinese, etc. food. The American products are a good representation of our convenience food, but not the whole range of great stuff we have in the US. But they’re definitely fun to have once in a while, LOL!

  • zeba

I want to know if a vegetarian can eat jellybeans 13 fabulous flavors?

    • TheSweetRoad

Hi Zeba, I’m not sure? If you look at the ingredients list can you see anything that’s not allowed for you?

  • turbo2421

Have you got instructions for the Brownie dough?

    • TheSweetRoad

Hey Turbo2421, sorry it took me a while to get back to you. I haven’t seen the brownie dough at our Lidl in a long time (and when I did see it a couple years ago I failed to put it on here) but next time I see it I can translate and post it here. Sorry, and take care!

  • Jan Talbot

Hi. Have you got the instructions for Bananalicious Ice Cream? Thanks.

  • Shirley

anyone have English instructions for mcennedy apple crumble . bought it and no English instructions ????

    • TheSweetRoad

Hi Shirley, yes! I need to post them, but here they are:
You need to add 100g of soft butter, 1 egg, and 500g of apples.

      1. Preheat oven to 180ºC (160ºC for convection oven).
      2. In a deep bowl, mix the contents of the big envelope with 100g of butter and egg, and beat with an electric mixer until combined. Set aside this crumble mixture.
      3. Grease a 19x29cm oven-safe dish. Peel the apples, cut in pieces and mix with the envelope of sugar and cinnamon (smaller envelope). Place apple mixture in dish. Evenly distribute the crumble mixture on top.
      4. Bake in the center of the oven for 40 minutes.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions!

  • Liselotte

what is the glucose syrup and the citric acid in the jelly beans made of? wheat, corn, rice or potatoe?
I need to know because me and my daughter is so allergic to wheat and gluten.
    Thankful for answer!

    • http://www.thesweetroad.com Faith

Hi Liselotte, So sorry for the delay in responding! Since I don’t work for McEnnedy I don’t know what the ingredients are in the glucose syrup and citric acid. Other research online shows that any glucose syrup could be made of wheat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glucose_syrup). So I would be careful if I were you. Hope that helps.
